Manuscript Pre-Submission Checklist: 20 Checks Before Journal Submission

July 31, 2026 · 9 min read

A manuscript pre-submission check is more than proofreading. Scope fit, ethics statements, methodological clarity, reference integrity and file completeness all influence the editor's initial assessment. These 20 checks provide a structured final pass before you open the journal upload system.

Research question and narrative

  • 1. Does the title accurately represent subject, design and context?
  • 2. Does the abstract match the purpose, methods, main result and conclusion?
  • 3. Does the introduction end with a clear gap and objective?
  • 4. Does the conclusion make a stronger claim than the design permits?

Methods, ethics and reproducibility

  • 5. Are design, sample, measurements and analyses sufficiently described?
  • 6. Are ethics approval, consent and registration numbers included where required?
  • 7. Are funding, competing interests and author contributions declared?
  • 8. Is the availability of data, code and supplementary material stated?

Results, tables and submission files

  • 9. Are all tables and figures cited in the correct order?
  • 10. Can captions be understood without searching the main text?
  • 11. Are numbers consistent across abstract, text, tables and supplements?
  • 12. If review is blinded, have identifying details been removed from the anonymous file?

Citation and bibliography integrity

  • 13. Does every in-text citation have a bibliography entry?
  • 14. Is every bibliography entry actually cited?
  • 15. Have DOI, author, year and title fields been verified?
  • 16. Have retracted or substantially corrected works been reviewed?
  • 17. Does each cited source support the claim attached to it?

Target journal and upload package

  • 18. Does the journal scope fit, based on recent similar articles and official aims?
  • 19. Have ISSN, publisher, indexing and fees been confirmed in primary records?
  • 20. Do the cover letter, title page, manuscript, supplements and checklists follow current instructions?

Coordinate the final check across co-authors

Do not leave the entire final pass to one person's memory. One author can review scientific narrative and methods, another tables and files, and another citations and references. After revisions, compare the abstract, conclusion, table values and bibliography again.

Freeze final files with a date and version label. Record which version was uploaded, which declarations were made in the cover letter and whether every author approved the final submission.

Red flag: If the central claim depends only on inaccessible, retracted or non-supporting sources, formatting corrections are not enough; the relevant section requires scientific reassessment.
